Delirium’s companion.
A head composed of shingle upon the shore
The washing of waves on pebbles
Was all that I knew.
I spoke and heard the echo
From a well deep under the ground
Muffled by distance
A voice came
All vowels with no meaning
Blinding light and misty shadows
You told me I was going to die
But all I heard was the sea
All I know is shadows
That was my first day
The high shriek of alarms
Woke ghosts all around
Sweat and nylon sheets
Tangle like demons threatening
Unseen damnation
as limbs struggle under unseen weights
I knew then that this was the second day
Cool breeze swept mechanically
From fans speaking Shakespeare
In a nightmare’s own voice
Breathing obstructed by fingers of Regret
names studded by drum beats
Staccato cacophony of footsteps
Beating syllables of lost moments
A break in the agony
A sudden lucidity
That was the last day.
